social services for vulnerable groups

The European policies for social services addressed to vulnerable groups have to be strong, effective and efficient. The European Funds for instance have a small and insufficient coverage for services destined to vulnerable groups – people suffering from chronic diseases (with emphasis on HIV/AIDS as this still is a major issue for Romania), commercial sex workers, drug users, people suffering from extreme poverty, children raised by mono-parental families or by the extended family in the absence of parents etc. Under the current economic situation, governments will be under pressure to address economical issues such as unemployment, inflation and other macro-economic problems while the direct social services will suffer from lack of involvement. The European Union has to honestly acknowledge the social problems that it faces and address them now more than ever.
